Thanks to choir teacher Isabella Custino, music is making a comeback. She was hired last year to restart NDB’s choir program after several years without music at the school. What began with just six students in a zero-period class has already expanded into two separate choirs, reflecting growing student interest in vocal performance.
The chamber choir is an advanced ensemble, requiring either an audition or a year of experience from the treble choir. The treble choir was introduced this year, a beginner class welcoming students regardless of prior sing.ing experience. The two groups perform together at concerts, providing a group that nurtures talent and builds confidence.
Performances are central to the program and, last year, students sang at the winter and Evening of the Arts concerts.
“We’ll have both of those performances, but we’re also going to be participating in two choral festivals this spring,” said Custino. “I’m excited for us to be able to get some feedback from esteemed judges and also just have more opportunities to perform on stage.
From six singers last fall to nine this year, Custino is optimistic. “It’s been exciting to watch the program grow already over one year, and I’m hoping that will continue moving forward,” she said.
As the choirs expand, each performance becomes a showcase of students’ talent and a way to bring NDB together.
