As each school year ends at NDB, student council elections take place. There are seven positions available for each class: president, vice president, spirit director, activities director, historian, secretary and sports director. Many students seek out leadership roles at NDB and aim to be involved, particularly in student council.
Tigers are required to create a poster, write a speech and sign a contract. They then deliver their speech to their class on the day of the election. Students vote, and the results are announced at the end of the day.
Students vote, and the results are announced at the end of the day. Junior Chelsea Johnson, a student who has served on class council for the past two years, planned to run for her senior year.
“I want to make our final year at Notre Dame something really memorable and fun for everybody,” said Johnson.
Many juniors are very eager to become seniors. There are many events dedicated only to the seniors, including Senior Sunrise, Senior Splash, Senior Spotlight and, as the school year comes to a close, Senior Sunset. For these events to be memorable, it is essential that those on senior class council have the skills to plan for these events.
However, with many of the current junior class council members running for ASB, many spots for senior student council have opened up, allowing students who may not have previously been involved with leadership to take a chance and embark on the class council journey.
Junior Ella McKinney explained what motivated her to run for student council, despite not being
on it previously.
“I want to make senior year something we will all remember and be able to plan events for the senior class next year,” said McKinney. “I am so excited to finally run for student council.”
Even as incoming seniors, it is never too late to get involved. Students who have been involved
through sports or clubs may decide to change things for senior year and do something different, like student council. It is also important to note that taking on new leadership roles at this stage can create meaningful final memories, while also making a lasting impact on the school community.
Tigers who are not successful in winning the election have the opportunity to be involved with leadership boards, like Ambassador, Link Crew, NHS and others. Students can also start clubs and join any that they want to be a part of.
Even though student council is a great leadership experience, there are various other opportunities to get involved.
The students who do get elected meet weekly to collaborate with their peers and plan for class bonding events, run the social media page for their class and inform peers of activities occurring.
Although running for class council can be intimidating, it is a great experience for students and allows them to enhance their leadership skills. They have the opportunity to make decisions for their class and plan events to be held.
Student council is a very special opportunity for students to develop essential leadership skills that allow them to feel confident when being involved in future endeavors. It can also allow students to break out of their shell and make decisions for the benefit of their class. It builds confidence and creates a strong foundation for leadership opportunities in the future.
For those who seek leadership opportunities at NDB, it is a great idea to run for student council to get very involved with the school community and learn how to work with many different groups of people effectively.
