We’re all in this together: Sharks and Vipers celebrate prom
Going to prom is one of the most exciting parts of being an upperclasswoman. It is a long-awaited event, and many students start planning for it far in advance to ensure the night is perfect. It is an important high school milestone, and it creates memories that attendees hold onto forever. This year, NDB’s prom was themed “A Night to Remember” and was based on the film “High School Musical.” It took place on Saturday, May 2 at Hotel Nia in Menlo Park, and the doors opened at 6:30 p.m. NDB juniors and seniors were in attendance, whether they went with a date or with friends. The unique venue created an outdoor and indoor space for students to dance, socialize and make memories. Senior Julianna Loar won prom queen, and junior Olivia Philip won prom princess. The night was a success, and it was a perfect way for students to spend time with friends and enjoy themselves.
It has become widely recognized that short dresses belong at dances, like homecoming and winter formal, while long dresses are for prom. While there are no real guidelines, the majority of NDB juniors and seniors follow this pattern. Prom is when attendees go all out with floor-length gowns, featuring various colors and styles. Choosing the right prom dress is often done weeks or even months beforehand, keeping in mind factors like color, fabric and style. Having the perfect dress is a key part in any prom.
Another part of prom culture is the promposal. It has become tradition for students to “propose” to whomever they want to take to prom as their date. Usually, the student orchestrating the promposal will surprise their desired date by showing up at their house after a sports practice or at another unexpected time. To accompany the surprise visit, a poster is created with a catchy phrase asking the question. A promposal is a more meaningful way to ask someone to prom. Rather than a quick text message, they are a way to show that one cares
