The idea of thrifting has been around for decades. Created for those who need to shop with a lower budget in mind. Over time, places like Goodwill, Savers and Plato’s Closet have become established in almost every city in the US. While these stores have always been available, the concept of thrifting has gained popularity among Gen Z in recent years for reasons beyond its affordability.
The popularity of thrifting has grown in recent years largely due to social media and the promotion of thrifting on it. Especially with the comeback of older styles, thrifting becomes the only way to find these “vintage” pieces. Something that was once made for affordability and low-income families has now turned into a weekend activity for those looking for older clothing styles.
Thrifting isn’t just cheap but also fights against the over-consumerism of fast fashion. Choosing to thrift rather than shopping from online stores like Shein and Cotton On is just one way that individuals can help reduce global waste. By shopping at second-hand stores, you are reusing old materials and keeping them out of the landfill. Additionally, thrift stores also work against the exploitative working conditions of fast fashion companies. Rather than employing thousands of factory workers at low pay rates, thrift stores rely on individuals and the donations they receive.
Thrift doesn’t have to be an in-person experience. For those looking for specific pieces, apps like Depop and Mercari offer the same effect as thrift stores. Online sellers, either offering old clothes or their own thrift finds, have become increasingly popular.
In the Bay Area specifically, there are a handful of great thrifts within NDB’s radius. More down south is Filmore and Fifth in Palo Alto, as well as Savers in Redwood City. For those closer to San Francisco and Halfmoon bay; Platos closet in Pacifica and Goodwill located in Burlingame. All around the Bay, smaller antique stores and privately owned thrifts can be found as well.
Thrifting is the perfect option for anyone looking for affordability or even a fun activity. Thrifting is definitely the way to go.
