AI has become a revolutionary tool not just for students but for people all over the world. It provides easy access to internet sources and gives us solutions within seconds. However, AI poses a serious threat to many employed people who worked hard to get where they are. In the relatively short time people have had access to AI, they have used it on multiple occasions to replace things a human can do, so they can complete tasks or find out information faster. Although this is a very smart way to stay efficient and productive, it takes away a lot more than it gives.
Many jobs nowadays are centered around technology, making it very easy for AI to step in and take over, leaving those workers with no job. When it first started, AI was not considered a threat because of how undeveloped the technology was, and how difficult it was to learn how to use. Most AI technology is very easy to use now, increasing the risk of people’s jobs being stolen and taken over.
Although there are countless jobs that are at risk, there are quite a few jobs that cannot be taken over, simply because it would be crossing our boundaries as humans, and taking humanity out of those jobs. Although many jobs could easily be taken over, some are under a sense of immunity due to connections that are necessary in order for the job to be done right. One of those jobs is a teacher. One of the main parts of being educated by humans is that they have real-life humanity and emotions, and they can make connections in person with a real person.
Courtney Blaskowar, a retired high school teacher, stated that she believes teachers will be safe from AI, due to the fact that a lot of teachers give a learning experience that can not be replaced by technology. She states, “You know, honestly, I don’t see AI coming towards teaching that much, or seeing that become a big problem. I used to be strongly against it, because I heard about everybody’s jobs being taken, but then I kind of came to the realization that AI will never be able to fully replace teachers, because for me, one of the main parts of being a teacher is having the emotions and feelings for your students, and a robot can’t just step in to replace that.”
With teaching, the student must be able to trust the teacher in order to retain the most information and get the most out of school possible. Blaskowar later continued saying that teachers who teach face-to-face end up having a deeper connection with their students, because of the humanity that is shared between a student and teacher. “We all saw it during distance learning, everything felt very isolated and secluded, and the teaching experience was nothing like it should have been, for students or teachers. If AI takes over, that’s how students would feel, because there wouldn’t be any connection, and it’s just so necessary when trying to get people to learn and grow,” shares Blaskowar.
Jobs all around the world are slowly being replaced by artificial intelligence, and although the idea is intimidating, jobs that require human connections will be safe due to the natural desire to connect with other people. Teachers provide the sort of connection that is necessary to create a good learning experience, making it one of the safest and AI-proof careers.
