Valentine’s Day, always held on February 14, is traditionally a day for couples to celebrate their relationship with flowers, chocolates and stuffed teddy bears. However, as Valentine’s Day approaches, more people are seen celebrating the holiday with their closest friends. This day, therefore, is filled with an event called Galentine’s Day.
Galentine’s is a way for friends to get together and celebrate their relationships with their closest companions. Whether it’s through brunch, dinner, or another fun activity, Galentine’s is a great way to cherish and honor friendships. With that being said, one should put Galentine’s on the calendar because cherishing one’s friendships fosters a sense of togetherness within friend groups.
“But if you’re focused on your friends during that period, then yeah, I really think Galentine’s Day activities and that kind of thing is really nice,” said senior Georgia Melvin, who has participated in Galentine’s with her friends.
Going to an all-girls school makes Galentine’s all the more special and important. NDB’s all-girls community allows all students to support one another, and friends need to know how they make others feel. Galentine’s lets friends explicitly express their love and gratitude for their friends every day. Whether it be supporting someone after a hard day or celebrating with them after an achievement, the all-girls community at NDB makes Galentine’s all the more wholesome.
“We made decorated cookies and had a sleepover,” said freshman Lulu Deal on what she did with her friends for Galentine’s. “I feel like you get closer with your friends when you do it … it’s important to spend time with your loved ones even if it’s not someone you’re in a relationship with.”
There are many ways to celebrate Galentine’s, and every friend group has its own way of celebrating. This makes each activity for friend groups all the more unique.
“We did like a Secret Santa, but for Galentine’s,” said sophomore Emily Milotich, who did a Galentine’s activity with her friends.
Galentine’s is a perfect activity to bring friendships closer together and to share your love and appreciation for your friends. So, mark your calendars for Galentine’s and plan a fun day with your friends.
