Valentine’s Day is the most romantic holiday of the year, and with stores already opening up their valentines day sections, it’s important to know how to purchase budget-friendly gifts for significant others. Finding the perfect gift that is a balance between thoughtful and impressive can be difficult, but who better to turn to for advice than the experts? Turning to people in healthy relationships can be great advice, especially for couples who have experienced Valentine’s Day before.
Even in relationships that have lasted for over 30 years, the simple act of a heartfelt gift can go a long way, and in some cases, even mean more than a flashy, expensive gift.
Barbara Tauskey, a member of NDB staffulty stated, “If I was given the choice I would say I would most assuredly prefer sentimental gifts. The most sentimental gift that my husband gave me was probably a picture of he and my son that he had framed, which I have on my dresser. But overall, a much more emotional gift absolutely means more. Flashy gifts come and go.”
Although couples who have been together for years have gotten the hang of Valentine’s Day, relationships between two people in high school find it harder to have the perfect Valentine’s gift. Expectations are high, and budgets are low, but that does not necessarily mean that Valentine’s Day has to be boring and not meaningful. With most people, a thoughtful gift will impress them, and the gesture will most definitely leave an impact.
Most high school students have a job, but when Valentine’s Day comes around, no one wants to spend their entire paycheck on gifts for their significant other.
Senior Brooke Morse also believes that a sentimental gift will make the same loving impact, if not better, stating, “Because we are long distance, our Valentine’s Day is a little different. Over InterSession, I plan on going out to visit him, and celebrate then by going out to dinner. I absolutely think Valentine’s Day is overpriced, and I would much rather have a sentimental gift, such as a sweet handwritten card, than a pricey gift, as it shows more thought.”
Whether it is expensive clothes and jewelry, or flowers and a handwritten card, Valentine’s Day is meant to be a celebration of love, not a price tag. While planning celebrations, it is important to keep in mind that the most meaningful gestures are the ones that are thoughtful.
