Noma Sushi:
Tucked away on 152 South Boulevard, Noma Sushi has become a favorite among locals. This Japanese restaurant holds 4.5 stars on Google Reviews and 4.3 stars on Yelp. But, what makes it stand out?
“I like the teriyaki chicken; the teriyaki sauce was pretty flavorful and tasty,” said Welte.
With over 50 sushi rolls, from vegetarian to classic options, it is no surprise that Noma has become an accessible spot, catering to a diverse group of customers, all able to find something delicious. One of their most popular dishes includes garlic edamame with a perfect balance of spice and tanginess.
“There are actual chunks of garlic in there, which makes it authentic,” said Alyssa Condrey, a senior at Maui Preparatory Academy.
Condrey remembers visiting Noma with her father, who introduced her to the sushi experience.
“I have memories of my dad and I going there, and every time I step in, it evokes a sense of nostalgia and happiness,” stated Condrey.
One of my favorite rolls offered at Noma is the Spider Roll, which includes cucumber, avocado, soft shell crab, tobiko and unagi sauce. The sauce pairs perfectly with the avocado, creating an enriching soft texture.
Beyond the menu, Noma is a quiet, yet delicious spot that feels like a miniature cabin with perfect food and temperature.
Near the back, there is a large sushi bar where you can watch the chefs make popular dishes.
This establishment is a reserved, yet inviting environment with various options for all newcomers. Most rolls are $10 to $15 – A great price for great food.
Village Host:
Just down the street from NDB lies a small family-run chain with the best pizza and charm. Village Host has been in business since 1962, expanding the restaurant over time to Capitola, Aptos, Burlingame and our very own Belmont. This spot includes an extensive curated menu of house-made pizza, sandwiches and burgers.
The first Village Host was opened in Burlingame, but due to its increasing popularity with the local community, the original owner, Ron Moroney, decided to expand. Over many years, Villag Host has kept the family name in the business, hiring many of Ron’s extended family. Specifically at the Belmont Village Host, with the co-owner being Nick Baitinger and over half of the employees being nieces, nephews and uncles.
“We are not a big corporation, so we really rely on the customers coming back,” stated Baitinger.
As co-owner, Baitinger comes in almost every day to get the restaurant ready. He handles many of the behind-the-scenes tasks that help the restaurant run smoothly each day.
“First, we have to come in and get all the money sorted for the day. Then, we go through and restock all the food and paper goods. I try to make it as easy as possible for the employees throughout the day,” said Baitinger. “We have also kept the environment and food the same over the years. This brings customers back and keeps the nostalgia of the place, which people really love.”
Village Host is one of the few local small businesses still being run by the family here in Belmont. With their fun and welcoming atmosphere, it is definitely the perfect place to share a pizza with friends and family. The welcoming environment continues to draw people in, creating a restaurant that truly brings the community together.
