Cunha’s Country Store is a HMB staple and a shop you can not miss. As one of the most central stores in the city, it is one of the most visited places in HMB by people of all ages. Often, students at HMBHS walk down to grab lunch because of the school’s open-campus policy. Students from all over enjoy their freshly made sandwiches, their acai bowls filled with various toppings and their large variety of drinks.
“Honestly, most of the people that come in here go for the acai bowls because they’re made fresh every day, and we get our acai from a local place nearby that gets it to us around once a week, and we take turns at the acai bar because we love that the most out of all the stations,” says Mary Saman, a cashier and worker at Cunha’s Country Store.
Cunha’s has been around for a long time, and the people of HMB treat it as a centerpiece of the town. Founded in 1924, they have been serving people the best food for over 100 years now. Everyone in town knows that Cunha’s is the place to go if people are hungry.
Not only do they stand by their strict standards of serving fresh homemade food daily, but they also incorporate other baked goods and foods from other small businesses around town. They feature foods from small businesses such as “Small Town Sweets,” “Moonside Bakery” and “Farmette Bakery.” These places all add to the charm of the small town. They also have their workers take a weekly trip to bakeries in Pescadero to get baked goods from places such as Duartes.
“Something that makes Cunha’s authentic, I think, is the fact that it’s been here for so long, it is right in the middle of HMB, and it’s just a place everyone’s been familiar with for so long. People come here on road trips or even from over the hill because people love to take beach days in HMB, and they always stop by here every time,” says Mary Saman.
Cunha’s is the perfect place to go if you’re having a craving for any sort of healthy or fun snack, or if you want to have a friendly conversation with the workers there. They often enjoy talking to tourists, and are always welcoming and kind. If you are ever in the area, Cunha’s is a place you cannot skip.
