While many people sit back and relax during winter break, winter athletes are working hard at practices and games during the off time. All three sports, basketball, wrestling, and soccer, continue with practices despite being off from school.
Both varsity and JV basketball teams have had a great start to the season, with scrimmages and games starting to take place. Usually, the sport has practice every day after school, or even sometimes, before school. As for over break, the practice schedule will stay relatively the same, but may run a little shorter. JV athlete, Sammi Barrett, is planning to go to Lake Tahoe over winter break and shared how she feels about having practice during that time, saying, “I want the whole break off personally, because I know I need it, but it’s also nice to have some time off.”
Many athletes feel the same way, but they stay committed and show how much they care about being present in their sport. Basketball coach, Coach Aubrie, shared her thoughts on the importance of practicing over winter break saying, “I think keeping some activity over break is really important to it’s actually kind of, I think, more of a pivotal moment for our season. Taking three weeks off during that period is really, really hard. And if you think about it, in the fall and spring, those sport teams aren’t taking three weeks off, so we have to be able to get them in the gym at some point.”
It is clear that NDB winter athletes put in time and dedication for their sport, and it does not go unrecognized.
