At NDB when students think about October, one of the first thoughts is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. October is the month when students show their support by raising money to help those with breast cancer.
Through this year’s bake sale, $2,808.56 was raised for Boarding with Breast Cancer Foundation. From the Dig Pink Volleyball games to wearing the pink Dig Pink shirts, NDB has a variety of ways to show their support.
Beyond Dig Pink, NDB has many great events to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which shows the community NDB brings. Junior Gabby Goldfarb, the president of the Dig Pink Club, shared the club’s plans and future plans.
“Okay so during the times of games, we have multiple opportunities to … get involved … there’s the bake sale that we had and there’s also there was poster making and then clean up and set up … the table as well,” said Goldfarb.
Ways one can support and empower those who are battling breast cancer are to volunteer and to come and support for such events.
“Volunteer [and] do what you can and … I think probably just like educate yourself on the topics [so] you’re better informed but … if we have like events … just come and show your support,” advised Goldfarb.

Kinesiology Department Chair and Dig Pink Club Moderator Coach Kate Mahoney shared more about spreading breast cancer awareness.
“Just getting word out there about early treatment, early screenings, things like that, so everyone knows kind of the protocols to go through in terms of battling breast cancer,” said Mahoney. “Just having a good support system, so inside of school here, either friends, teachers, coaches … around you, if you know someone that is going through cancer battles [is necessary]. It’s super important to get the word out there, especially being … in high school … just so that they’re aware of those … preventative measures to take in battling potential breast cancer.”
At the Dig Pink game, NDB Alumna Tammy Byrne ‘17, came to make a speech. She founded this event in memory of her mother, who passed away due to breast cancer, and to bring attention to the disease and its effects.
The Dig Pink Club plans to have more meetings and donation opportunities throughout the year. Through actions and words, one can raise breast cancer awareness which can make a huge impact in the community.
