As my freshman year at NDB comes to a close, I think about the upcoming years of my high school career. What college will I go to? What will I major in? What is my goal in life? It seems as if I had to decide years ago.
Throughout this year, us freshmen have had a couple of college meetings. During the meetings, each student is asked about what they want to major in and what they have passion for. The truth is, we have no idea. There is not a single subject that stands out more than others. Maybe for some there is, but for the majority, we were fresh out of middle school a couple months ago. So to put the stress of college on a 14 or 15 year old’s back is a big deal.
“I think the future is scary because you never know what’s coming next and you never know where each decision you make is going to end up in the long run. Everything is unexpected.” says freshman Clarissa Raposo.
Although it is good to have a plan for your future, it is a big decision to make at a young age. I don’t want to spend the rest of high school preparing for a career that I might end up hating. The biggest thing about a teen’s mindset when it comes to career paths is the feeling of regret. Nobody wants to look back and regret their life decisions.
Although I can just lay low and not decide on a passion or pathway, I have been told to set long term goals for myself and to “start early,” but how can I start early when I have no idea what I have a passion for? I show real interest in a hobby or subject one week, but the next comes around and I’m over it. How can I make a decision if I’m always changing my mind?
It’s not just about finding a career. It’s needing to find something you are passionate about that can also provide lots of wealth in the long run, but on top of that, it has to work out with your schedule and beliefs. Just thinking about finding the perfect walk of life is scary.
When we are seniors, we hope that we can look back and not regret our highschool years. We hope that our plans for our life that we make freshman year will coordinate with our goals for the rest of our lives.
