Inspiration is one of the most essential parts of creativity. All good ideas, all works of art, all innovations start with inspiration. It is the catalyst of all ideas.
There are many things that can inspire someone. It can be an experience, a person, something in nature and endless other things. It does not take much to spark the imagination. However, inspiration looks different now than it did in the past. Because one app changed the way we create: Pinterest.
Pinterest continues to become more and more popularized. It is a platform many NDB students use and benefit from. When it was originally created by co-founders Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp, users had to be invited in order to have access to the site, according to Medium, “The Inspiration Story Behind the Success of Pinterest.”
NDB alumni Hope Goblirsch ‘92 has been a Pinterest user since the beginning. She shares her earliest memories from when it was first released.
“I felt very honored when I was invited to join. I was in a mother’s club and started hearing a mom talk about it, and when I inquired she said she would send me an invite. I thought it was the most amazing thing I ever saw! ” said Goblirsch.

Pinterest has truly come a long way since its time of invite-only access. It has shaped the way we think, dream and create. Hope Goblirsch shares what she has noticed about how Pinterest has changed and shaped people in a new way.“I feel like it started out as more of a mom’s thing and it transpired into an everyone thing. People planning weddings, trips, working on business projects, things for teens. It became an app for everything. And then it seemed like a girl thing, but I found out boys used it too! So it really is for everyone,” Goblirsch stated.
Pinterest has become an app that everyone can benefit from. It has shaped people in a new way, and created a new way to dream. Pinterest helps visually organize and collect ideas, and vision boards are a huge aspect of this. It allows people to feel inspired and ideate and it stimulates creativity.
Thanks to Pinterest, the world is a more creative place. Sometimes, all someone needs to get creative is just one image. One word. One thing that will spark an idea in their mind. Pinterest is the perfect way to do this. It is one huge inspiration board.
On the internet, it is easy to feel trapped. Between popular social media apps like SnapChat, TikTok, and Instagram, people often feel they can not escape toxicity or unrealistic standards. But Pinterest never emanates these emotions. It is a safe corner of the digital world.
NDB junior Alexis Anderson has been using Pinterest for over 5 years. She shares her experience with the app, and shares why Pinterest feels different from other apps.
Pinterest is many things. It is an online sanctuary. It is a vision board. It is an endless window to creativity, and it has left a positive impact on its users far and wide.
