Welcome back to OZ! Last year, the world was swept off its feet by the new live-action musical Wicked starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Many people loved this adaptation of the musical so much because of its upbeat and catchy musical numbers, the whimsicality of the city and school, and the nostalgia of the storyline. Because of this, the franchise continues on November 21, 2025.
In the previous movie, Elphaba and Glinda became very close friends. They grew close over the course of the movie because of their love for magic and doing what is good and just for the people of OZ. The movie ended with the iconic song “Defying Gravity,” which started the storyline of Elphaba being considered the “wicked witch.” Mainly, the song was talking about how she was going to reach for her own goals and stop following what everyone expects of her. Everyone was very excited for “Wicked: For Good,” including myself, and here were some of my thoughts after seeing it:
Overall, I thought that the movie was great. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande yet again portrayed their characters flawlessly, and the visuals were outstanding. The movie was full of colors and fun visual elements that really brought the film to life. At times, I found myself getting slightly overwhelmed with the number of aspects that were happening on the screen at once. For example, we would be in the midst of a song, and there would also be things flying across the screen and flashbacks, all happening at the same time.
On another note, the playlist was very vibrant. It combined aspects of the previous and loved soundtrack with newer elements that kept the viewers engaged because of the classics, and intrigued them with the new aspects. My favorite song was “For Good,” which was an emotional number between Glinda and Elphaba where they reflect on how their friendship changed each other and how thankful for the time that they had with the other. This song directly reflects some of the important messages in this film, which include friendship, never giving up, and accepting yourself.
“Wicked: For Good” offers and powerful and memorable experience to anyone who watches it. This film leaves the audience feeling transported into OZ and the lives of these characters. Through the catchy soundtrack, relevant themes, and stunning visuals, all work together to create a wonderful film that I would recommend to anyone who enjoyed the previous movie.
