The California Academy of Sciences is one of the most innovative and diverse science museums in the world. Located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, it brings together an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest and natural history museum, all under one roof. But is it really worth the trip to the city?
On November 16th, I had the opportunity to visit the California Academy. It was an experience that blended science, wonder, and fun in one place.

The museum is unique because it houses multiple attractions under one roof: an aquarium, a planetarium, a rainforest dome, and a natural history museum. Walking through the rainforest exhibit felt like stepping into another world, with butterflies fluttering around and tropical plants towering overhead. The aquarium was equally impressive, showcasing everything from colorful coral reefs to deep-sea creatures.
One highlight was the Morrison Planetarium, where the immersive dome show transported us across the universe. It was both educational and breathtaking, reminding me how vast and mysterious space really is. The living roof was another standout feature, a green, sustainable rooftop that demonstrates how architecture and nature can work together.

Crowds were manageable, and the exhibits were interactive enough to keep both kids and adults engaged. My only note is that the tickets were on the pricier side, but the variety of experiences makes it worthwhile.
Overall, my visit to Cal Academy was inspiring. It’s not just a museum; it’s a place where science comes alive. If you’re in San Francisco, it’s absolutely worth spending your day exploring. To answer my question, yes it would be worth the drive out from the peninsula.
