NDB honors committed athletes during signing day

The annual athlete signing day

NDB’s signing day is an annual event that recognizes seniors who are continuing their high school sport to the collegiate level. The seniors who have decided to do this are Gabby Goldfarb, Allison Yue, and Gia Rivera. This is a special day that recognizes the seniors’ accomplishments and future successes.

“I always like signing days…they are so exciting because they are really the culmination of so much hard work, effort, commitment, and I love celebrating girls who are continuing their career in college,” said athletic director Laura Gill. “[I am] so pumped for all three of them. They all picked amazing schools, and I just think it’s amazing that they’re choosing to continue to play in college.”

Athlete Gabby Goldfarb signed to Chapman University to continue her academic and athletic career in water polo. She chose this school for its strong academics, supportive environment, and team culture. After falling in love with Champan after her first visit, she is beyond excited to continue playing water polo there as it offers both an athletic opportunity and a close-knit community where she can thrive.

Goldfarb stated, “It’s the cherry on top of the college because I already decided that Chapman was the college for me when I first visited, and then being able to continue to play water polo there is just a really exciting opportunity, and I am really looking forward to it.” Goldfarb added, “Having a close-knit team that wasn’t super competitive is really nice because I don’t want to put so much pressure on myself and still want to have the flexibility to participate in other activities. In general, I thrive in small classes and small environments where I can get personal help from teachers and coaches, and Chapman is really accommodating to all of those things.”

Senior athlete Allison Yue committed to John Hopkins to continue her academic and athletic career in pole vaulting and track. She credits her successes to years of hard work and dedication, sharing that the sport has shaped her resilience and determination, teaching her to reset after setbacks and continuously improve.

Yue states, “I think signing to John Hopkins is a product of all my hard work both in the classroom and on the track, and I am so excited to go to this school. The campus is amazing, I really like my teammates, and in general, I really like the school and the community, and it just demonstrates my willingness to grow, curiosity to learn in the classroom, and improve on the runway.” She continues, “Competing in track has definitely made me a very dedicated and committed person and someone very determined because when one jump goes wrong, just trying to figure out how to get back on the runway and make the next bar. It has also taught me how to reset because mistakes happen, but I will always bounce back from them.”

Gia Rivera: UCSD - Volleyball

Senior athlete Gia Rivera committed to the University of California, San Diego, to continue her academic and athletic career in Volleyball. She says her decision was driven by the strong connections she felt with the coaches and teammates, as well as the opportunity to grow both on and off the court over the next four years.

Rivera states, “Signing to my college means finding my home for the next 4 years and through all the hardships and successes that were gonna have as a team and grow just to be a better athlete, and I am so excited for the next journey.” She continues, “What drew me to UCSD was first the location is great, San Diego is amazing, but the thing that really locked my decision was the people and the coaches. That’s a huge plus for me, and that was my number one thing I looked for in the recurring process: connecting with the coaching staff and players, because I’m going to be with these people every day for the next 4 years, and I want to have a good connection, not only have them be my coaches but my friends too. The coaches and amazing teammates really made the ultimate decision for me.”
