Do people really follow through with their New Years’ resolutions?

Every year, people will hear the famous saying, “New year, new me.” I personally don’t entirely believe in that saying. However, I do believe that it is good to have an open mind at the beginning of the year, but I don’t believe that someone is going to automatically change into a whole new person overnight. The new year also comes with New Year’s resolutions.

A New Year’s resolution is a goal many people set to complete by the end of the year. In my opinion, it is one of the hardest things to complete. According to Entrepreneur.com, only 9.2% of people complete their New Year’s resolution.  

I have stopped making New Year’s resolutions for quite some time now, given that I knew it was difficult to follow one saying for a total of 365 days. People typically set their New Year’s resolution as something that is out of their comfort zone. This is why I believe people don’t follow through with their resolutions, because they don’t always want to do something they aren’t comfortable with.

It also follows with the saying, “New year, new me.” It takes time for someone to achieve their goal and to develop a new mindset. Why does a person have to quickly become a newer, better version of themselves on New Year’s Day? Why couldn’t they have changed their attitude at any point during the previous year?

Instead of making a New Year’s resolution, people should set small goals for themselves throughout the year. As long as they complete one of their goals in the year, it goes to show that they made an effort into making a positive change in themselves. Just because another year has passed, it doesn’t mean that you are a new person.

The new year does not make a new you, because the only person that can make a new you is yourself. Overall, I strongly believe that people typically don’t follow through with their New Year’s resolution, but people still continue to make them every year.
