As the new school year continues, homerooms have elected their homeroom presidents. All freshman, sophomore, junior and senior homerooms have elected one or two students to assist with the class. A president’s responsibilities include reminding their fellow homeroom students about upcoming events, prepping for spirit rallies with their homeroom, and more.
However, with these simple jobs being the main tasks, the question may arise; is the role of homeroom president worth taking seriously? While homeroom presidents are a popular role for NDB students to try out, their work may be overlooked due to the low level of commitment the job requires when compared to the tasks of ASB.
Junior Laila Daheb is running for homeroom president in Mrs. Martin’s room and described the tasks she was looking forward to in the role. While running against two competitors, Daheb had to make sure to stand out through her speech to secure the votes of her peers.
“I’m looking forward to giving all my ideas to student council and prepping everyone up for the rallies,” said Daheb.
Running for homeroom president is a great opportunity to try out a leadership position without the heavy responsibilities of being on ASB or class council. Being a homeroom president can be a great way to learn numerous life skills that can be used in the future.
Junior Gabby Goldfarb was a president of her freshman year homeroom and had many positive remarks about her experience.
“Being a homeroom president was fun, we talked to our homeroom before every collab,” said Goldfarb. “It’s a great experience if you don’t want to get fully involved in student government.”
Director of Student Life and Leadership Alisia Bergholm is the core director when it comes to leadership roles for NDB students and mentioned her thoughts on the level of responsibilities of homeroom presidents, as well as the importance of the title.
“[Homeroom presidents] do have a say, they need to be at every student council meeting and they should be using their voice to speak up if they have an opinion,” said Bergholm. “They are a very important part of student leadership.”
The role of the homeroom president is not to be overlooked, as the work of each president heavily matters. Even though the level of commitment may be lower than with ASB, homeroom presidents are a crucial part of student leadership. Our homeroom presidents assist in allowing you, the student body, to get their ideas across and in action. Running for president of your homeroom is a fantastic way to begin making changes at NDB.
