After last month’s Turkey Trot and Powderpuff Game, ASB began planning its next spirit event of the school year. The group of student leaders organized the annual Winter Spirit Week for the student body as an outlet before final exams and winter break. Winter Spirit Week began on Monday, December 11 and will continue through Thursday, December 14, just before fall finals kick off.
The week started off on Monday with “Ugly Sweater Day.” Students filled the halls with their favorite holiday sweaters, ugly or not. The designs included holiday themes, Christmas movies and shows, and characters dressed up in winter attire. Others had popular sayings on them, like “Feliz Navidad,” “Merry Christmas” or “Seasons Greetings.”
Tuesday was “Tree Topper Tuesday.” Students walked around campus as their favorite Christmas tree topper. There were several angels and stars seen strutting their stuff around the building in style.
On Wednesday, the halls will be transformed into the North Pole, to fit the theme of “Santa’s Workshop.” Seniors will dress up as Santa Claus himself, while the rest of the school will dress up as elves, reindeer and various other characters found at the North Pole.
Thursday will bring back a student body fan favorite theme: “Hit the Slopes.” Students may dress up in ski suits and other snow clothing to show they are ready to go skiing, snowboarding or even just going to build a snowman. It will look like NDB has transformed into a ski resort.
This year’s winter spirit week will not count for spirit points because ASB does not want to put more pressure on students to dress up or compete. They want their classmates to just enjoy each theme day.
“What we want to do, especially leading up to finals, is just to have some fun de-stressing activities,” said ASB Spirit Director Mallory Moore. “Bringing in spirit points can sometimes make people really stressed about getting their costumes, and we just want it to be for fun.”
ASB got all four of the class student councils involved in the planning and preparation for the spirit week days. During their meetings, they brainstormed themes, decided on them and then created posters, all to help promote the annual event.
“[Freshmen student council] came up with ideas that, sometimes, the other classes had already come up with. But, we know what a lot of freshmen are thinking and what they like, so we contributed by bringing our ideas,” said Freshman Athletic Director Sammy Kakala.
With all of the hard work that goes into these events, it is rewarding for ASB and the other student leaders who plan them to see the enthusiastic participation of the rest of the student body.
“When we come up with the spirit days, I’m thinking of what I’m going to dress up as, in my mind. But then, seeing someone else do something completely different that I wasn’t expecting – it’s exciting to see all the different creative ideas,” Moore said.
Winter Spirit Week is a good opportunity for students to have some fun, dress up and not have to think a lot about finals before they actually begin at the end of this week.
