Now that November has begun, it is time to fall back. On November 5 around 2 a.m., the entire state of California, shifted their clocks back and people got one extra hour of sleep that night. Though this change typically makes many feel more energized in the morning, it also comes with feeling more exhausted earlier due to the sun setting at around 5 p.m., creating the illusion that it is nighttime around dinner time.
In 1918, the first Daylight Savings Time went into effect during the month of March. People thought if they had more daylight then their energy consumption in the United States would go down. But when the time switches during the fall, it becomes darker earlier, meaning humans should be getting more sleep for their bodies.
California is included in the 48 out of 50 fifty states that change their clocks. Although there have been many debates on whether it should be changed or not, only Hawaii and Arizona keep their clocks the same all year round. The main reason would be that changing the clock forward causes people to lose an hour of sleep, resulting in a disruption to their sleep patterns. Also, when the sun sets earlier, it gets cooler earlier as well.
Despite some disputes about the time change, it brings some of the most celebrated holidays of the year, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve, which puts people in a more spirited and festive mood. It also brings colder weather, sometimes so chilly that one can see their breath in the air. But the good news is that it marks the best time to snap pictures of Christmas tree farms, being wrapped in one’s favorite scarf and holiday pajamas, and drinking lattes and hot chocolates by the fireplace.
“It definitely brings more of a Christmas feel. I also feel more productive when it gets darker earlier for some reason,” said freshman Taylor Hom. “Although I like the time change, I do prefer it when it gets darker later because it is easier for me to hang out with my friends [and] my parents are more willing to let me go out.”
This can be true for many young teenagers out there. Daylight does bring a sense of safety compared to the darkness of the night, which makes parents more cautious about letting their teenagers go out with friends.
Though the time change does cause some safety concerns, it helps many get into the holiday spirit and encourages them to sleep earlier in the night.

We voted to end Daylight Saving Time here in California, however here we are again with the time change. Thank you to our legislators who once again ignore the will of the people.

For anyone wondering when Daylight Savings Time ends, it does so every year.
