The Catalyst (TC): What is your reaction to the masking guidelines?

Martha Anne Kuntz (MK): I believe the masking mandates are clear and understandable. I know it has been a rough road for everyone, and, in particular, for students wishing for a normal life within school walls. The new mask mandate makes it both easier and harder to find a comfort zone for many people, though, so hopefully we will all be considerate of the choices we have been given.

TC: Why do you choose to wear a mask or not wear a mask?

MK: I choose to continue wearing a mask in order to make everyone continue to feel comfortable. I think it can be tough for teachers who would love to have the freedom of actually teaching and talking without a mask. I tend to talk a lot and while I have gotten used to wearing and talking with one on, it is definitely harder.

TC: What do you think of people who think differently from you: Those that are or are not wearing a mask?

MK: It is a choice and I appreciate being given one. I think of it this way – we could be forced to wear masks against our will – I think of those people in countries who have no choice at all. I try to be respectful and hope those who choose to think and act differently will remember we have this wonderful freedom.

TC: Do you think dropping masks in school was the best decision for the state to make?

MK:  I’m not sure. I can honestly say I was tired of reminding students to wear their masks properly. Many did but many did not and it became a tiring battle. I don’t want to ever forget how hard lockdown was, how many people were sick, and how we should continue to try and prevent the virus from spreading.

TC: Do you think there should be an online option for community members that are not comfortable with these masking guidelines?

MK: No. Online combined with in-person learning was incredibly hard for teachers – at least for me. I think the time has come when those who wish to wear a mask (myself included) can do so with good protection. Teachers and students can still stay distanced if necessary, but maintain the education we are known for. Online options were needed for a time but that time is over.
