Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF

Halloween, the highly anticipated night when children get to dress up and collect pillow-cases full of candy, but kids and teens could spend that night making someone else’s sweet, by trick-or-treating for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund.

Almost 70 years ago in the midst of WWII, UNICEF started giving out monetary donation boxes for Halloween, so kids could contribute to their cause. UNICEF works to improve the lives of children worldwide, who are struggling with issues such as war, poverty, and an overall lack of resources. A few things UNICEF provides for these children are food, clean water, health care, and education. Donations also help in the event of natural disasters and well as help fulfil “every child’s right to grow up in a safe and inclusive environment” -UNICEF.

While Halloween may revolve around fun costumes and haunted houses, trick-or-treating reflects a community effort to create a special night for kids. In appreciation for their community, kids could collect money for the children that don’t get to experience this, and are facing much different problems.

In addition, every year teens face the awkward question of whether they are too old to go trick-or-treating anymore. At some point, high schoolers must realize that they should leave the candy to the little ones. If you don’t want to spend Halloween night sitting on the front porch, handing out sweets to kids who look like they are having way more fun than you, trick-or-treating for UNICEF is a great alternative.

UNICEF is accepting orders for their boxes all throughout October, and caters to groups like schools and clubs, as well as individuals who want to participate in this fundraising event.
