When we think about the things we can’t live without, oftentimes we think of the basic necessities we need in life. But if you think beyond the question, it becomes clear that what people truly need goes beyond the physical things in life. To find out what keeps people going, interviews were conducted and students were asked one simple question: “What is one thing you can’t live without, and why?” Readers can really see what people value and what is revealed about who they are.
“One thing I absolutely cannot live without is my baby blanket. It’s been with me since I was born, and even though it’s pretty worn out, it still brings me comfort. It’s like a little piece of home, my childhood, and all the moments that made me feel safe and comfortable.” Senior Julia Lewandowski shared. Julia talks about her blanket being there with her through any situation, and that’s why it’s so important to her. “Whenever I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed with school, I just cuddle with my blanket and it reminds me that everything will be okay. It’s a reminder of who I am, and I honestly would not be able to live without it.”
“Something I would not be able to live without is Spotify. Whether I’m studying, hanging out with friends, or just trying to unwind, my playlists on Spotify are always there for me,” senior Sophia Wentley said. She expresses how music calms her down in any situation and is like an imaginary best friend always by her side. “Music has a way of capturing every mood, every memory, and even the moments I can’t put into words. It’s more than just background noise; it’s my escape, motivation, and sometimes my therapist. It kind of feels like having an imaginary best friend with me all the time. I don’t know what I would do without music in general.”
The things we can’t live without tell the story of who we are personally. They connect us to our past, bring comfort in the present, and inspire us for the future. Sometimes, it’s the little things that mean the most. When asked this question, it may be hard to even think about what you can’t live without at first, but once you reflect on everything in your life, it becomes clear that these small things are what is most personal and important to you.
