With the brand new NFL season kicking off recently, anticipation and excitement are filling the air. After months of no Sunday night football games, fans are ready for countless game days, touchdowns, wins, and most of all, cheering on their favorite teams once again. Even for people who do not follow football religiously, it is an entertaining and engaging sport that anyone can enjoy. At NDB, some students and faculty are already filled with intrigue about upcoming games and match-ups.
For many, the return of the football season means that students and their families have something to look forward to each week. While some spend their Sunday afternoons watching the game with their friends and family, others may just be getting updates through online posts and various social media platforms such as Instagram, X, and ESPN. Whichever way students choose to enjoy the game, it allows people to feel connected and included in a broader community of football fans.
“We love to watch the games on our TV at home with a ton of snacks,” commented NDB junior Olivia Gould. “It is a great way to spend time with family and friends, especially after a very busy week.”
While some people are truly invested in the season, others are not huge football fans. While they may not be particularly interested in the game, everyone can feel the excitement that it brings. It may also mark the changing of the seasons from summer to fall. Whether one is enjoying the season with family or friends, it brings people together with snacks, good company, and a good sport.
“My mom’s side for the family roots for the 49er’s but my dad’s side of the family roots for the Commanders, but honestly, when it comes to just watching football, it doesn’t matter too much who you support,” explained Samantha Kirkpatrick, a junior at Notre Dame. “It is super nice because we get to spend time together as a family, nonetheless.”
Occasionally, one might be able to hear students remarking about a team that they are rooting for or against, sharing their opinions about various star players, or discussing halftime shows. The overall consensus is that the game allows people to unite over something common, to marvel at the crazy moments, and laugh at the fumbles.
As the season progresses, fans will continue to cheer, argue, debate, and celebrate the wins together. Even if your team wins or loses, one thing is certain: the new NFL season brings a lot of anticipation, exhilaration, and a sense of connection that makes the fall season feel more whole.
