Women’s sports are often overlooked because many people see them as being less masculine. Due to the fact that masculinity is a common theme in sports, they often get little representation in the media. Women’s sports that are considered to be feminine, such as volleyball and tennis, have gotten consistent representation.
With the limited screentime women get in sports media, they have done an exceptional job of putting in consistent effort. Especially in male-dominated sports such as basketball and soccer, women are seen breaking records and beating the standards the media has for them. Recently, the Nigerian women’s national soccer team had an amazing two-goal comeback and successfully defeated Morocco, claiming their 10th continental title. Due to many achievements in women’s sports, they are being brought up more, not only in the media, but also in people’s conversations.
“I have seen a slight change in social media highlighting more women in sports. I’m starting to see more college and professional female athletes getting sponsorships with important name brands like Gatorade or Nike.” Said Lisa Carbone, an avid watcher of women’s basketball.
In sports media, the more commonly represented women’s sports are the ones that are seen as more feminine due to the gender demographics of the players. Sports such as volleyball, tennis, and gymnastics are the sports most commonly seen as feminine because around 70% of these sports’ players are women. Crowd sizes have a large difference when it comes to the different genders, but as seen in many different sports, the sports that are seen as masculine often have smaller crowds when women are playing, and the sports that are seen as feminine have smaller crowds when men are playing.
Although it may be different to go to a women’s sports game when that sport is more commonly viewed as masculine, it always helps the demographic to switch things up once in a while. By showing support for women in uncommon sports, they will slowly become less uncommon.
