In recent months and weeks, it seems that every time a news channel is opened, there is a new tragedy. School shootings are one of the greatest problems in America today, affecting students, families and teachers constantly. According to CNN U.S. News, as of September 23, 2025, there have been 53 school shootings in America. Communities far and near are being repeatedly affected by gun violence, which is why our voices need to be heard.
Last month, students near NDB were directly affected by this rise. Last month, students near NDB were directly affected by this rise. On September 10th, both Menlo Atherton and Carlmont were put into lockdown due to a shooting threat. While authorities were able to get control of the situation before anything happened, students were still affected by the scare. Many NDB students have friends or family that attend Menlo Atherton and Carlmont high schools, making this event a scare for the whole school community.
“When we went into lockdown at first, I didn’t think it was that serious, but it went on for a long time and I started to get worried,” shared Menlo Atherton sophomore. “My classmates didn’t seem scared, but my teachers did, which made me more scared”. “After this happened, it definitely made me more aware at school, and I do have it in the back of my mind. I was just really worried for the whole community because of everything else that had happened that week”.
NDB has not been directly affected by gun violence, and of course, it is intended to stay that way. Even though NDB has not been affected, that does not mean that our students and teachers do not share the same fears as those who have.
It is important to remember that people all over the country are affected by gun violence each and every day. While these tragedies can cause chaos and worry, they also remind us how important it is to look out for one another. By staying informed, supporting those affected, and continuing to speak up, students can help create safer and more compassionate communities for everyone.
