Within America’s current tumultuous political climate, it almost seems as if it has become fashionable to express hatred or disdain for the American way of life. Countless stereotypes and online trends make a mockery of American culture, with everything from the stereotypical “tacky tourist,” the “uncultured redneck” and much worse. Patriotism, or expressing any form of allegiance to America, is frowned upon and seen as a direct support of so-called dictatorship, fascism and oppression.
But why, within the borders of the United States, has it become acceptable to so blatantly insult the country that provides us with more civil liberties and freedoms than most countries on Earth? How can it be so widely accepted to burn our country’s flag in the streets, or for media outlets to publish articles so openly critiquing America’s flaws, while failing to understand or represent the values that our country stands for?
America is not a perfect country. Our history has been a short but violent one, filled with slavery, violence and corruption. But our history is also one to be proud of – not for the events of the past, but for the spirit of our founding fathers and the values of freedom and equality that our forefathers structured our country on. America’s foundation is built on the values of justice and equality, beginning with the colonists who separated from the British Empire and continuing throughout generations of proud Americans who uplift these ideals.
As an American woman and citizen, I am incredibly proud to be a part of one of the greatest countries in the history of the world.
Where else in the world can you freely enjoy air conditioning, all different types of cuisines and go outside in any clothing you wish without being punished by the law? Especially for women, in many countries across the globe, female citizens are given very little personal autonomy. Not many countries offer these luxuries that we as Americans so easily take for granted.
Many of these liberties are ones we take for granted, and taking them for granted in it of itself is a privilege. It is an immense blessing to wake up each morning in a country like America – a place where anyone can succeed with a good work ethic alone.
While it is critical to acknowledge the flaws of the past, it is even more important to learn about the ideals that our country was originally founded on. In recognizing the glory and accomplishments of our forefathers, we can move forward as a nation, inspiring future generations of Americans to feel pride and celebrate their country.
