For the 2025-26 school year, NDB introduced its annual brand new theme, inspired by the children’s book “The Big Orange Splot” by Daniel Pinkwater. The story’s message of being true to yourself, embracing creativity and welcoming differences reflects the tone and values that will guide the school community.
Head of School Meredith Essalat ‘98 highlighted the values that she hopes students will take away. “I want [students] to leave their mark,”
said Essalat. “… I want us to continue to find ways that we can ‘splot’ the values … like compassion, empathy, kindness, inclusion. I want our students to take away…that they are valued and loved and cherished and celebrated.”
As this theme unfolds in the coming weeks and months, students reflect on how the story’s message connects to school life.
“I think it does connect to [our school] because we are … all different,” said junior Sarah Lee. “We all come from different backgrounds, and we all have our own unique talents. So, I think it really represents NDB …”
Many are seeing this theme come to life through their school day, recognizing the values this story has to offer.
“I feel like everyone’s really embracing community and being their own person as well,” said senior Cecily Rambod.
As this year unfolds, this theme serves as a reminder of the importance of celebrating diversity and individuality. Much like “The Big Orange Splot,” NDB is where students can be themselves, making differences, not dividers, and building a stronger community.
