Being a senior in high school is an achievement in itself and deserves to be celebrated. Working through kindergarten to 11th grade, beginning college applications, obtaining a driver’s license, and many more milestones have been achieved by these 17-year-olds, who are almost ready to enter adulthood.
As senior year is an exhilarating gateway to another major life chapter, many high schools celebrate their senior class in unique and honorable ways. NDB in particular emphasizes senior pride and maturity through some unique celebrations and traditions for its oldest class.
Senior sunrise, painting parking spots, and decision day are all nationwide traditions that almost every American high school has adopted. However, with its strong sisterhood feel and historical ties, NDB includes many unique honors throughout the 12th year.
One unique aspect of the NDB senior tradition is the use of the school uniform during activities that promote remembrance and school spirit. As per tradition, seniors are invited to decorate one of their uniform skirts with paint, ribbon, and patches, representing their chosen university or other career path. This festive and colorful event heightens the joys of the more recognized “decision day”, where students can celebrate with each other about college achievements and future plans.
“Decorating skirts was so fun last year, I think everyone enjoyed it,” shared NDB graduate Claire Odderstedt ‘25. “It was a great opportunity to show some creativity and bond with everyone, and of course, celebrate getting into college. I highly recommend it to upcoming seniors.”
In addition, NDB seniors also include a twist in the normalized yearbook signing at the end of the year. 12th graders swap out their yearbook for one of their white uniform polos and have friends, classmates, and teachers all sign directly on their shirts. Encouraging messages and nostalgic farewells decorate the generally bland uniforms, as the spirit of sisterhood reigns on with a delightful farewell.
“I think that [polo signing] is really meaningful. It brings a lot of people together and makes the class more unified,” shared senior Georgia Melvin. “It’s a great memory to have.”
The use of the NDB uniform in end-of-year traditions serves as a symbol for transformation and new beginnings. The well-worn clothing is retired and turned into a lovable keepsake that will forever remind students of their former high school days.
