TC: What brought you to NDB?
GC: I was leaving my previous job because I didn’t want to do middle school anymore, and just looking around. And when I interviewed here, I just really liked the environment that I felt.
TC: What do you want your students to know about you right away?
GC: [This is] a second career for me, I am very familiar with high school girls. I have two daughters […] so I’m kind of familiar and up to date on some of those things. I try to have, I think, a good time in class, but it is math, so we do have to be serious. I believe it’s important for my students to feel comfortable in class […] So we’ll have some fun and we’ll also like, I care about their well being and everything. We also expect, we’re gonna have some level of standards.
TC: What is your philosophy/style of teaching/ do you have a unique way of teaching?
GC: So philosophy is definitely I do want my students to see application and everything we do. I know math can sometimes be hard to see, but coming from an engineering background, I think it’s important to understand that we have an application, and what we’re learning is not just there to just do stuff. That’s kind of my philosophy.
TC: Is there something you’re looking forward to during your first year at NDB?
GC: I’m really thinking about that lately—-Intersession. I’ve just learned about that today, and I’ve got a couple ideas of [what] I’d like to do, but I have to kind of flush them out. So I’m kind of looking forward to seeing how that all goes this year. I haven’t seen the current courses, but I have a couple ideas, one of which is Lego based. I think that because it could be a lot of fun.
