On April 14, NDB held its first culture fair in the dining room. The event was created by the Coalition for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB), a new leadership board that was created this school year, which advocates for embracing diversity at NDB. Students from all backgrounds are able to represent their country with fun games and delicious food.
Participants were given guidance by the Coalition of DEIB on the requirements, such as filling out a Google Form regarding what they will bring, what they will wear and a draft of their poster board. Diversity is important at NDB since so many from different backgrounds come together and can educate others more about different cultures.
“We decided to hold a culture fair because, although there are clubs that represent people’s cultures, I feel like it’s good to see everyone’s culture represented in one place at one time so that no one is under-represented or not represented at all,” stated DEIB Vice President Claire Nguyen.
In today’s society, where DEI is a popular topic, Nguyen shared her thoughts on its prevalence in a community.
“A lot of … the DEI policies are being taken away, so I think it’s like extra important that we are mindful and respectful about the demographics around us that are being discriminated against,” she added.

At the fair, there were multiple stands with information about the culture, and students were able to walk around and learn about them from student representatives. At the stands, there were food and games for students to try. Those who represented a culture dressed up in traditional clothing.
“I want to help more people learn about traditional and modern Chinese culture,” stated freshman Amy Li, who represented China with calligraphy and paper cutting.
The culture fair allowed students to express their cultures and educate classmates about certain traditions and perspectives. The event let them share their heritage without any judgment. In today’s society, diversity remains an important topic as people from different backgrounds come together as one community.
