Over the years, female athletes around the world have faced countless challenges, including
unequal pay, limited opportunities, and dealing with outdated stereotypes, making it essential to recognize their resilience. During Women’s History Month, it is especially essential to acknowledge the strength of these athletes and emphasize the importance of challenging norms and advocating for equality in sports.
Even within schools, many female athletes struggle to have the recognition they deserve despite their hard work and dedication. Women frequently face a lack of attention for their achievements, leading to less media coverage and fewer fans at games. It is important to promote women’s games to the same extent as their male counterparts to foster equality.
Junior Maddie Eckertt states, “I think that they [schools] should really promote their games more and have people show up and get excited about female games.”
Women constantly face skepticism in comparison to males, overall discouraging female athletes of all ages. This unequal treatment makes it important to challenge these perceptions and advocate for greater changes.
NDB coach Aubrie Businger said, “I think women always get told that they aren’t as good as men, or can’t do certain things as men could, so I think that it is important that we empower each other during this month to show everybody… that women are capable of these things.”
It is necessary to confront these outdated perceptions and encourage equal recognition in schools and beyond. During Women’s History Month, it is an essential time to celebrate their resilience and work towards creating a more equal playing field for females.
