The spring sports season at NDB has been underway for a little while now, and all the teams have been enjoying their seasons. The spring sports at NDB include softball, lacrosse, swimming, beach volleyball, and track and field. Both players and coaches have to be fully prepared for practices and games during the high school season, and all teams and coaches must work together to create a fun yet competitive environment.
Lacrosse, coached by William Evans, has been a popular sport at NDB, and both the JV and Varsity teams have been improving as a team throughout the season. Lacrosse, played with twelve players on the field, requires a lot of fitness to be able to maintain running to attack and then defend the goal.
“It’s going really well,” said coach Will Evans about how the lacrosse season is going so far. “My favorite part is having the girls learn and creating confidence, and having [an] exciting season to look forward to.”
Beach volleyball, coached by Devon Derecho, has been a part of the NDB campus since 2019, which is when the beach volleyball courts were built. The beach volleyball team at NDB has been bonding as a team, and both the varsity and JV teams have been progressing in a positive direction as the season advances.
“It’s going pretty well,” said junior beach volleyball player Georgia Melvin when asked about the season. “[My favorite part of playing beach volleyball is] just the team and you know everyone getting to play together.”
Softball, coached by Nick Dykes has one team and has done very well in the regular season and the playoffs over the past few years. For their first tournament of the season, the softball Tigers went 3-0, showcasing how their team is ready for the upcoming season. Additionally, senior Allison Lui made the San Mateo Journal Athletics Honor Roll, proving to be an asset at the plate and on the mound.
“It’s going really well,” said junior Skylar Loo when asked about how the softball season is going. “My favorite part is the friends that I made so far and just being able to play a sport that I enjoy with people that I enjoy.”
Track and field, coached by new coach Paul Lapke, includes a variety of different events in each meet. These include the 100-meter, the 200-meter, and more. Additionally, there are relay races at these meets, where athletes have to rely on their other teammates to hand off a baton after a certain distance.
“The seasons going well so far,” said new track and field coach Paul Lapke. “So far, a lot of people have already shown good improvement from the start of the season. Everybody’s been very welcoming and very helpful for me figuring out new things.”
Lastly, the spring sport swimming, coached by Wendy Connolly and Scott Ray, has had a successful start to their season, with meets during the week and weekends testing the athletes.
“The season is going really well,” said junior swimmer Maia Mejia-Young. “We’re doing some of our practices at NDB and others of our practices at Woodside Priory, and I think it’s been about putting in the time and getting in the distance and laps to improve.”
Spring sports are full of excitement and have driven many athletes to succeed in their sports, with plenty of time in the season to improve in many other areas in all the different spring sports.
