The business originally started in 2014, with its first location in Mountain View. The San Carlos location opened recently in June of 2023 and the business has several other locations in the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Campbell, Mountain View and Concord. Doppio Zero serves Southern Italian dishes, and is most recognized for its Neapolitan style pizzas, which featured them on the Michelin Guide.
As soon as the San Carlos location opened, the restaurant was instantly popular, receiving reservation requests every night. The large dining space inside as well as the outdoor patio gives a great homey feel and gives the customers the ability to comfortably dine during all seasons.
Starting the meal off with the Croquette and the Beet Salad was a great choice. The Croquette is a crispy potato ball filled with Gruyere cheese, and served with a delicious truffle fondue. This dish provides a warm and spiced taste, mixing the gruyere cheese with the earthy flavor of the truffle sauce gives the dish perfect balance. The outside consists of an incredibly crispy potato outside, which makes it so this dish can easily replace the usual start of bread at the table.
In contrast to the warmth of the Croquette the beet salad gives off an incredibly fresh, and citrusy flavor. Varied colors of fresh chopped beets, topped with stracciatella cheese and hazelnuts, is topped with a balsamic vinaigrette. This dish is such a staple for the spring and summer seasons, the freshness of the beets paired with the cold creamy cheese is a perfect refreshment on a warm day.
Both of the shareables paired together give a contrast of sweet citrus, and savory spice. Doppio Zero has many options for appetizers, but these two definitely take the cake.
While the restaurant provides many different main entrees including pastas and meat dishes, their Michelin Star pizza is the way to go.
The Margarita Pizza, although basic, has so much flavor. The pizza is a thin and crispy crust, still puffed up on the edge, giving the dish a fiery taste straight from the oven. The fresh mozzarella is soft, stretchy and savory only amplifying the texture even more. The tomato sauce has a very basil-forward flavor which contrasts well with the cheese. The freshness of the dough paired with the toppings is what makes Doppio Zero’s pizza award winning. This pizza is great to share a meal between two people and is definitely worth coming back.
Ending the night with their desserts really tied the meal together. Their tiramisu in a cup is a great quick and easy way to go, providing a soft texture and a great coffee flavor. If you’re going for more of a summer taste, the Limoncello cake, although incredibly sweet does have a great lemon flavor which paired well with the blueberry compote.
Most appetizers ranged between the prices of $14-18, while the main dishes were $20-25. For the quality and freshness of the food, these prices are definitely worth it. Getting shareable dishes for two people gives a meal a total of around $70, similar to most restaurants. Every dish eaten left our plates clean. Doppio Zero lives up to its standards and is definitely the place to go this spring and summer.
