Basketball:
Led by varsity basketball Coach Samantha Rossi, the Varsity basketball team consists of many of the same players, with the newest addition being Lorea Melander, a freshman. The varsity captains are Jane Hipps and Julianna Loar, who have led the team to many victories this season. The JV team has been working together through some tough games. This was also the year of the first-ever Knockout Cancer game, created and organized by both teams.
Lizzie Johnson, a varsity basketball player describes their team’s biggest achievement so far, “So far this season, compared to last year we have worked as a team to beat supposedly better teams than us. I think our biggest achievement was winning the knockout game.” Johnson adds that they have new end-of-season goals, “[We want to] put up a fight against outstanding teams in our league, win the rest of our games, and win the playoffs.” Johnson also adds that she has one last personal goal, “My personal goal for this season is to make sure everyone on the team has a space to communicate their feelings and be able to grow together.”
Overall, this basketball season has been going well and they are 13-2 so far. They are performing outstandingly and did a great job in winning the jungle game against Sacred-Heart Schools. They have most of the same players from last year but have been working better together as a team this season. We can’t wait to see what’s to come for the last part of their season.
Soccer:
Varsity soccer, under the leadership of Osha, Louise, and Ryann is looking quite similar to last year with some new additions to the team; Cadence Goblirsch, Ashley Turek, and Ella Leyte-Vidal who bring a new dynamic to the team, The captains for this season-Emilia Luis, Anja Isabella Svanberg, Kayleigh O’Reilly, and Olivia Caballero have been guiding the team through a strong season. With their collective effort, the team has made an incredible impact this season, having both tough and successful games.
Nelly Hickson, a junior varsity soccer player who has been playing since freshman year discusses how the team has been doing this season so far. Hickson states that their biggest achievement so far is, “Coming together with a new coach, and new assistant coach and gelling well and working well as a team.” Hickson adds more on her thoughts for this season, “I think we are doing a pretty good job considering how many injuries we have had and having a new coach. We are on an uphill slope and think we will keep doing better.”
So far, the soccer team has been doing well, and are hoping that they keep working well together with new coaches and a new program.
Wrestling:
The new sport added to the Notre Dame calendar is wrestling. Catherine Dorf, Kathy Dinger, Taylor Hom, Alondra Ordonez, and Jiya Panchal are the new wrestlers. Congratulations. Their first wrestling match was hosted on campus on Thursday, January 9. Serra and Notre Dame battled against Riordan and put on a great show for the tigers to watch.
Arlene Empleo, Associate Head of School for Student Services and head coach for Wrestling discusses how her team has been doing for their first season at Notre Dame. When discussing their biggest achievement this season Empleo states, “Creating a team. These girls knew of each other but would probably have not crossed paths unless it was for this team. We have been trying to get this team together for years, so just having one is a huge achievement.” She adds, “We are doing pretty well. The girls have had a tournament pretty much every weekend since we started and as a team this past weekend, we took third place we haven’t placed at any other tournament so that’s a big deal for us for sure.”
Overall, the new wrestling team has been doing great and they can’t wait to continue wrestling. Can’t wait for what’s to come for this new team.
The winter season will be wrapping up shortly and all tigers did a great job this season partaking in their sport and leading Notre Dame to many victories. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next winter season sports.
