On Wednesday, January 8, NDB held its first ever on-campus wrestling meet. In its inaugural season, the team invited athletes from Serra HS and Riordan HS to compete. The night began at 5 p.m. with the boys’ matches, which were followed by those of the girls. The NDB student body was also encouraged to be in attendance, with a blue-out theme in place as well as the snack shack.
The event held many firsts, including senior Alondra Ordonez becoming the first NDB student to get a pin at the school.
“I was really, really excited [when I won]. … I was really proud since before that, the tournament didn’t really go so well, but I think that was a big moment to be proud of, especially to get a pin and not points,” said Ordonez.
NDB ended the evening with three wins in total, as sophomore Taylor Hom won via forfeit before Ordonez while the same outcome occurred for junior Cat Dorf after. As they only have a five-person roster, the Tigers were able to win the majority of their matches, which was a point of celebration for the team and its supporters.
The Wrestling program has been heavily promoted this year in an effort to encourage participation for its inaugural year. Although the team is fairly small, there is hope that events such as this one will cause others to decide to join the sport for future seasons.
“I think it’s important [that NDB hosts events for sports] because it brings more awareness to sports that exist, especially wrestling, as it’s a relatively small group right now, with five of us, I think coaches and teammates want to make it a bigger sport, and hopefully, you know, qualify for CCS and other future championships,” Ordonez stated.
The Wrestling season ended on Wednesday, January 5 with a meet at Serra HS, in which the team won three of their five matches. With the end of their inaugural year, they are looking forward to the future, already excited about what lies ahead for this program.
