With the excitement of Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, local businesses, including mom-and-pop shops and esteemed coffee chains, are preparing for the last-minute chaos of customers looking to purchase thoughtful gifts for their loved ones. Though the holiday is known for celebrating romantic love, many businesses also look to embrace self-love and friendships to appeal to anyone hoping to cherish special connections in their lives.
Peet’s Coffee
Only available until February 15, the limited-edition Blushing Iced Latte has become a favorite for those looking to add a sprinkle of sweetness to their typical dark roast. The strawberry purée and milk complement the strong, bitter taste of coffee, making it the perfect option for the early-morning risers looking for a balanced pick-me-up or the late-night owls ready to focus on their studies.
Though the Belmont and San Carlos Peet’s Coffee is most convenient for NDB students, select Peet’s stores are selling the drink nationwide.
Plaza Florist & Gifts
Plaza Florist & Gifts, located in downtown San Carlos, has been diligently preparing for the hustle and bustle of Valentine’s Day. Known for their elaborate range of flower bouquets, the shop aimed to tailor their choice of flowers to the couple’s preferences. Roses are always a staple, but Owner and Head Designer Jill Naghdchi, who has been in the flower business for over 40 years, also ensures that other variations like hydrangeas, lilies and orchids are available too.
“Valentine’s is just two [of the] busiest days of the year and we call that … “Beast of the Events,” shared Naghdchi. “So, it’s huge. … We always prepare to hire more designers, more help, more drivers and at that week, we almost go to the market every day because each flower … comes [on] different days and we want the freshest ones for our customers.”
Naghdchi has noticed that there is a lot of pressure for those scrambling at the last minute, so getting everything prepared far in advance as the owner is vital for keeping it low-stress.
Backhaus
With locations in both San Mateo and Burlingame, Backhaus has become a popular bakery with local residents and is known for its unique flavors and delicious bread rolls.
The business gives customers the option to pre-order various products to pick up on Valentine’s Day. They offer a Penflora Coffee Carrier Bouquet, which includes a bouquet and has an extra slot designated to hold coffee. Chocolate Sablé Cookies, Earl Grey Madeleines, Backhaus Totes and gift cards are also available to pick up for the ultimate Backhaus lover.
