The Model United Nations (UN) club, moderated by Mrs.Conolly and run by Aleeya Baqai, has had numerous accomplishments so far and is looking to further improve for the spring semester. The purpose of this club is to provide students with the chance to learn about global issues and current events. While they are learning about this they are developing skills in public speaking, research, and debate.
This club exists to provide students with a simulated experience of the United Nations, allowing the participants to learn about global issues by researching, debating, and negotiating as representatives of different countries, practicing the diplomatic process to solve complex world problems. It is known to be best for people interested in political science, international relations, economics, and current events in general. This year, those who are a part of the club will be writing and possibly publishing a paper concentrating on a topic that the club chooses together.
Co-president Gabriela Formanek discusses how this club works, “Model UN is a mock United Nations assembly. It nears the geopolitics of the United Nations and we talk about political events a lot. Last year we wrote a position paper regarding American exceptionalism” Formanek also added the purpose of the club which is, “To expose students to foreign policy.” Fromankey also describes what one meeting looks like, “ We go over current events, talk about what’s going on, and then get down to certain positions down to the end of the meetings. The majority of what we do is discuss with one another.” She states that the club has been moving slowly but in the second semester, they are sure it will pick up its pace, stating,“One of our goals for the next semester is to make it to conferences.”
Overall, the Model UN club has been working diligently and is hoping to make it to conferences for the next semester. So far they have written a position paper regarding American exceptionalism and will continue to work hard. NDB looks forward to seeing what they have in store for the last semester of working together as a club.
