As the holiday season rolls around, streets across towns and cities transform into a spectacle of dazzling lights. For many families and friends, visiting these bright, festive displays is more than just a seasonal activity, it’s a cherished tradition that brings a sense of warmth and togetherness.
For sophomore Lithium Gutierrez, holiday lights have always been a part of her family’s holiday experience.
“When my family and I walk around the San Francisco streets, there’s always so much going on,” Lithium says. “It’s more than just the lights—it’s about the people you’re with and everything else happening around you.” Every year, they go out together, not just for the lights but for the shared experience. “It’s something that doesn’t cost a lot of money, and it’s good for us to walk around and not just be sitting inside.”
Holiday lights can also represent a much-needed escape, especially during the holiday season. Sophomore student Margo Gallegos reflects on the joy of seeing the city streets transformed into something magical.
“It’s like everyone works together to make the streets look pretty,” Margo shares. “At night, everything just looks better, and it’s really fun to see that we’re all working together to make it happen.”
The sense of community is also a big part of what makes these displays meaningful. Seeing friends, families, and entire streets come together to create something beautiful highlights the unity that defines the holiday spirit.
But beyond the lights and the spectacle, it’s the memories and feelings they evoke that truly matter. Whether it’s a yearly drive, a bundled-up walk with loved ones, or a spontaneous moment of wonder, holiday street lights have a way of creating lasting impressions. For many, these lights reflect joy, reflection, and a sense of connection that defines the holiday season.
