This year, NDB introduced the Coalition of Diversity, Equality, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) to promote awareness and celebrate diversity within and around the NDB community.
Last spring, Community Service Coordinator and World Languages Teacher G Imazumi-Hegarty ‘07 welcomed the student body to fill out an application to be accepted into DEIB and chose seven members for its inaugural year. The team of student leaders is comprised of President Aleeya Baqai, Vice President Claire Nguyen, Director of Marketing for Equity and Expression Isabella Lo, Director of Communications Tori Carlson, Director of Belonging with International Students Helen Chen, Director of Belonging for Domestic Students Loki Ingalls and Director of Belonging for New Students (Transfers and Freshman) Olivia Caballero.
When asked about what inspired them to create the leadership board, they emphasized the importance of inclusivity at NDB and beyond.
“[It’s] a space where diverse voices [are] heard and valued … [and] helps foster empathy, innovation, and a sense of belonging, ultimately making our community stronger and more reflective of the real world,” explained Imazumi-Hegarty.
Throughout their first semester as a leadership board, DEIB has planned and hosted the Disability Awareness service project, Diwali celebration, Mid-Autumn Festival and other events. The coalition also founded the Black Student Union and frequently collaborates to plan future ideas that involve the whole student body.
They are full of drive and excitement to promote more diversity and inclusion within the NDB community so that people feel welcome to share their culture, tradition, stories and more with their fellow peers. The NDB students and staffulty are excited about DEIB’s inaugural year and the impact it will continue to make on the community for the 2024-2025 school year and beyond.
