As the holiday season approaches, the annual tradition of gift giving has begun. Many holidays from Hanukkah to Christmas celebrate through thoughtful presents; however, individuals have different perspectives on the typical price range.
“[People choose to spend large amounts of money on people] to show that you’re grateful for who you buy the presents for … I think not necessarily the money [shows the amount of gratitude] more so the actual time and effort and the thoughtfulness that you put into a gift” said junior Katie Moorhead. “I usually try to give [my friends] something that they want, most important, something that they need … I don’t feel like they would want something that’s just gonna sit there and collect dust.”
Moorhead is also aware of how social media can play a role in the holiday season.
“I do think that social media has influenced people to kind of feel like they need more stuff … and we’re so easily influenced by what we see. I feel like social media has influenced us to overconsumption” she added.
Senior Catie Moore is also amongst one of the many who celebrate Christmas every year. She believes that for many, the idea of expensive gifts stems from love.
“If you get [a] more expensive gift, it means that you care more about that person. Me, personally, I don’t believe that” said Moore.
Moore believes that gift prices can range for different relationships. “Like, if it’s an acquaintance, I would think like $20, max. But like, if it’s family, I don’t think you can put a price on whenever you get them, like, as long as it’s something that they want or something that means something to them.”
One lasting piece of advice Moore recommends is creating homemade gifts as an alternative to store bought items. Another example she offered is making cards or getting creative by crocheting.
While students navigate the complex world of gift giving this holiday season, it is important to remember the true meaning behind a present. A gift will always remain a heartfelt effort to spread cheer and thankfulness into someone’s life, no matter the price tag attached.
