The highly anticipated “Wicked” movie adaptation has arrived, and, in my opinion, the film served as a stunning tribute both visually and narratively to the original stage production.
Growing up, musical theatre was a passion of mine, and the “Wicked” soundtrack held a special place in my heart. I had not listened to it in years, but watching the film not only delivered a spectacular story and unforgettable performances, it also transported me back to my childhood.
On a personal level, I can genuinely express that this adaptation with the breathtaking cinematography as well as the striking character performances breathed new life into the music that brought me so much joy when I was younger, evoking a sense of nostalgia and wonder that was profoundly moving to me.
The same is true for Sequoia senior Sierra Kitching, who has loved the musical since childhood, sharing how deeply the story resonated with her as well.
“Wicked” is a musical I’ve loved for years, and seeing it translated into a film could have definitely gone wrong. But I think the movie paid such a beautiful tribute to the original. It captured everything I loved about the show, while also making it feel fresh and exciting,” said Kitching.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo deliver standout performances as Glinda and Elphaba. Grande flawlessly captures the character’s classic mannerisms and humor and Erivo gives a touching and raw performance of Elphaba, really paying tribute to the depth and complexity of the character. Both of these actresses’ interactions and performances are unquestionably the moving emotional heart of the film.
Although the movie was so enjoyable for long-time “Wicked” fans, those not as familiar with the story can find the film quite enjoyable as well.
“I hadn’t watched the “Wicked” play in a long time…However, that definitely didn’t stop me from enjoying the movie,” senior Andie Wong stated. “I thought many scenes had powerful messages about the power of kindness … I thought the chemistry between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who played Glinda and Elphaba, really made the movie so much more fun to watch.”
“Wicked” the movie offers a sensational experience for those unfamiliar with the musical, while also deepening the emotional resonance for longtime fans like myself.
