Near November, Christmas decorations are often displayed in people’s front yards. Although Christmas is one of the most major holidays of the year, putting decorations up is too early because November is in fall. There are other important holidays such as Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, and people may get tired of seeing decorations in early November.
Fall officially starts around September 22-23 and ends on November 30. Meanwhile, winter officially starts in late December. Christmas is usually associated with Santa Claus, gifts and snow which are a major part of decorations. Displaying Christmas decorations before the end of fall is too early because the season is not yet winter and Christmas is much more commonly associated with that season. Although some may believe that Christmas decorations are more fun, there are also a variety of Thanksgiving and fall decorations one can put up in their home, such as pumpkins or turkey inflatables and statues.
November’s most major holiday is Thanksgiving, when one shows thanks to loved ones and usually gathers for a big family meal. Thanksgiving is celebrated throughout the United States and many come to gather. There are signature dishes made during Thanksgiving, which gives a warm welcoming feeling such as turkey or mashed potatoes. Many get excited about eating, sharing a meal with loved ones and spending quality time with family. Christmas is very similar, but Thanksgiving should be recognized on its own during November. There is also Veteran’s Day, when the country recognizes those who are part or have been a part of the United States Army.
Christmas occurs at the end of the year, which leaves a high anticipation for those waiting for the holidays. If Christmas decorations are displayed too early, some people may be tired of seeing them for a long period of time, especially when seeing them constantly on the street. Early Christmas decorations may take away the true meaning of Christmas, which is celebrating time together and joy, and early decorations may degrade these values. The idea of displaying early decorations overshadow the important holiday’s values.
“Yeah, I feel like it’s way too early [in November] especially because Halloween just happened so like new decorations are still … up, you know, like it’s just Christmas decorations shouldn’t come up until like December,” sophomore Chantal Henderson shared. “I feel like … it also just gets old, like, having them up for so long … It’d be more special and unique if you had it closer to Christmastime.”
“Christmas decorations are too early to display in November,” added freshman Elaine Xu. “[Displaying Christmas decorations] makes Christmas meaningless.”
Although Christmas is something one should definitely get excited for, it is not necessary to display Christmas decorations early in one’s front yard. Christmas decorations may overshadow important holidays such as Veterans Day or Thanksgiving. In addition, November is in the fall and its main holiday is Thanksgiving, which is important to celebrate because it is a time when one gets to show appreciation for their friends and family. Also, early Christmas decorations may take away the main idea of the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas decorations are best to display in December, since it matches the season and one can truly embrace the values that are celebrated during that time. Although there are many videos saying that “Christmas officially starts in November,” it is important to acknowledge the important holidays celebrated in November since they are significant to American culture.
