As the New Year approaches, it is essential to set goals to achieve a successful and gratifying year filled with growth and new opportunities.
Although creating resolutions can be considered pointless, it is important to recognize where one can develop and what places need change.
Social Justice Teacher David Muir explains, “I try to pick something that is practical that I might be using everyday or stop doing… that could be how to look at a day more positive[ly] or start reading more..[or] something that [has to do with] self-improvement…”
Sticking to these aspirations can be challenging at times, so devising ways and strategies to accomplish them can be beneficial. Creating a plan can ensure that a goal will not be lost along the way and will make it easier to carry out and execute.
Freshman Audrey Johnston stated, “[I want] to have my friends remind me to [practice tennis]”
There are many alternate methods, such as creating a vision board, journaling or sharing a similar goal with a partner to make the process easier.
Junior Cecily Rambod said, “I’m definitely going to try my best to not procrastinate as much as I do and to stay on task and maybe use methods like the Pomodoro method and have a study buddy or something, just trying to keep myself on task.”
Looking at past resolutions and their outcome can help one create goals that are attainable and ways they can successfully follow through with them.
Counselor Christina Christenson stated, “Yes, [I have been successful in the past with achieving goals] but not consistently. I think having, like, accountability with friends, so… I’ll tell them what my goals are and they kind-of offer to like help me stay on track and then also like writing it down somewhere so I can actually look at it and know that it is not just in my head.”
Creating resolutions can offer excellent opportunities to help individuals succeed in the coming year and give a source of direction. There are many ways a person can be motivated, and it is important to take extra steps to ensure a successful goal. By focusing on specific goals, a person can have a fulfilling year, allowing for progress and development.
