Halloween is a holiday for people of all ages, but it is celebrated very differently by each. Unfortunately, it can get in the way of a lot of things. For example, Halloween is usually during the school week, as this year it is on a Thursday. For young children, they cannot really stay out late to trick-or-treat since it is a school night and they will be tired the next day. High school students are in the same boat as many have sports practice or homework and can find it hard to get out.
There is also the issue of finding a costume, specifically if a student wants to do a group costume or do their own costume. Costumes can sometimes take a long time to put together and can also be expensive. Stores such as Spirit Halloween offer many options, but by the time mid-October rolls around most of their stock is gone. Plus a lot of their costumes are either for young kids or adults, not leaving much in for teenagers to find something they like.
Some may also have a difficult time enjoying Halloween in general, as often it is associated with horror movies like “IT” or “Halloween,” gore, and overall scary situations. Many people do not like this genre of activities and would much rather prefer to stay in than subject themselves to frightening scenes. There is a softer side to Halloween, although in my opinion it is more like fall than Halloween. This is often laid back and includes cozying up in a blanket or baking pumpkin cookies with friends.
Overall, Halloween tends to be more of a scary holiday than a fun one. There’s a lot of focus on the social aspect of it as well as the horror part, and for some people that can be uncomfortable and not their idea of a good time. Halloween seems to have more negatives than positives as a holiday, and considering all of the issues it can cause with school, costumes, and the emphasis on horror, I do believe it to be an overrated holiday.
