In an online poll conducted by The Catalyst, NDB students shared what they thought the spookiest movies of the Halloween season are. From classics dating back to the late 1900s to exciting psychological thrillers, the ranking gives insight into movies what the student body will be watching.
1. “Scream I-VI”
The “Scream” slasher series has been a popular choice for a Halloween movie night ever since its original release in 1996, with the most recent addition, “Scream VI,” premiering in 2023. The classic horror film follows a masked killer who terrorizes the main heroine, Sidney, and her friends in the small town of Woodsboro, California.
2. “Ghostbusters”
“Ghostbusters,” the comedic horror franchise that premiered in 1984, proved to be one of the most popular choices at NDB for an action-packed sci-fi blockbuster. The film is centered around a paranormal investigation service and their adventures eliminating and capturing ghosts around New York city.
3. “The Conjuring”
“The Conjuring,” a supernatural horror movie about a family terrorized by a malevolent spirit, follows the family’s struggle to exorcise the demon and find out the mystery behind strange occurrences in their house. It is the perfect scary movie for a horror movie night.
4. “Midsommar”
The film “Midsommar” is a 2019 folk horror film about an unknowing American couple who is mistakenly drawn into a violent Swedish cult and their struggle to escape from it. The movie is a psychological thriller and is sure to be a great watch for Halloween night.
5. “The Ring”
“The Ring” is a franchise based off of a Japanese urban legend about a cursed videotape, which causes the viewer to die within seven days unless they pass it on to another person, who must then also avoid being killed by the demon haunting it. This is the perfect movie for horror fans who enjoy thrilling and mind-bending plotlines and horror tropes.
6. “The Shining”
Always a beloved horror classic, “The Shining” follows the story of a man who takes a job looking after a hotel with his family and is slowly driven mad by the entity that cursed the hotel. It has been a wildly popular classic ever since its release in 1980 and continues to be one of the most popular psychological thrillers of all time.
