This year, just in time for Halloween, the movie “Smile 2” was released on October 18th. Directed by Parker Finn and distributed by Paramount Pictures, this film continues the plot of “Smile 1”, where an innocent person is haunted by an evil spirit who embodies their loved ones, causing increasingly spooky and dangerous things to occur. The new movie follows the main character Skye Riley, a rising pop star who is forced to face her dark past in order to regain order in her life before a dark spirit claims her life. With a direct connection to the first film, “Smile 2” brings back actor Kyle Gallner, who continued with his role as Joel from the first movie.
Scary movies have been a classic Halloween tradition for years. Since thriller movies are often watched during the Halloween season, this upcoming film may be the perfect form of scary entertainment for NDB students. However, not everyone is a fan of horror movies, especially the ones that can be gory.
This is definitely a frightening movie that gave me chills while watching. It’s unnerving how quickly smiling can go from something joyful to something creepy, an idea that sets this horror movie apart from most. As the lead, Naomi Scott did a fantastic job embodying the role of a celebrity swamped with her career and gave an emotional and chilling performance throughout the duration of the film.
The film is set apart from other horror films due to its incredibly realistic special effects. The film contains a lot of bloody content, which is incredibly chilling and realistic looking. It seems as though this element is what makes this film so terrifying for the viewer, along with the numerous jump scares. As the main character’s perception of reality becomes totally warped by the spirit controlling her, the movie gets darker and more confusing for the audience, introducing suspense to the fear already being invoked by the film. Complete with a twist ending, audiences are left wanting more, setting up the franchise for a possible “Smile 3” in the future.
NDB students had mixed opinions about this brand-new film. Junior Lilly Lauritzen voiced her opinion on this movie for Halloween night.
“[Movies like] “Smile 2” are good to get you in the Halloween spirit, for sure,” said Lauritzen. “I’m a big fan of almost any scary movie. I thought that [Smile 2] was really scary and fun to watch”
With this brand new sequel, “Smile 1” and “Smile 2” may be the perfect additions to a scary movie marathon night. With thrilling jump scares and a nail-biting plot, prepare for this new scary movie to entertain you for a perfectly spooky Halloween night.
