With the vibes of food, clothes and weather changing as the autumn season comes alive, it only makes sense that the types of music people listen to change as well. In the summer, most people enjoy upbeat and fast-paced music like “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter and “Hell N Back” by Bakar. Then, in the winter classic Christmas and holiday songs start coming on. During the time in between there seems to be a transition as music gets slower and more comforting to help kick off the school year right and ease into the season of fall.
As it gets deeper into the fall and raindrops begin falling against roofs, people often turn to music that has melodies and lyrics that correspond with this setting. Artists like Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, Girl in Red and Lana del Ray all have music that match this vibe, which is why songs like theirs are played more during this time of year. A few songs from these artists that are well known are, “we fell in love in october” by Girl in Red, “Scott Street” by Phoebe Bridgers and “My love mine all mine” by Mitski. All of these songs have slow and melodic tunes, which allow them to fit right in with the scented candles and dark colors that are associated with fall.
“In the months of fall and spring, my music taste is really calm, because there’s not a lot of stuff going on in my life…my music is slower in the fall, because I guess it just matches the mood more,” said freshman Sophia Adao.
Music is a large part of communities and is often used to bring people together, which is especially true of the fall and winter seasons because of the holidays and the cheerful tunes that are seemingly everywhere, getting stuck in people’s heads. Specifically at NDB, students’ and teachers’ music preferences range from classic 70s songs to newer 2020s tunes.
A few musicians and bands from the older times that have a bit more connection to NDB teachers are The Goo Goo Dolls, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and The Cranberries. Although these artists are older, they are all fairly recognizable for all age groups. They are good fall listening since they have songs with very similar lyrics and melodies to current music. Several if not all of these bands’ songs have the same calming and heartfelt theme that is longed for in fall music, making them desirable despite their age.
“[Freshman Eliana Crespin and I] like to listen to Frank Ocean, Sublime, Mac Demarco, Lana Del Ray, Frank Sinatra, Kendrick Lamar, Patrick Watson, etc,” said freshman Kareena Bhasin, referring to how many people like songs from multiple generations.
People choose certain songs and musicians not only for their melodies but also for the lyrics in their music. In the colder seasons such as fall, people tend to be more in touch with their emotions, which may be why the lyrics in many of these artist songs are often about love and their lives. Also, fall is a transitional time when the weather turns colder, making people usually prefer cozier, slower tunes than they liked in the summer. These lyrics often resonate with how people feel during these last couple months of the year making them a more popular choice of music for autumn.
