One of the most anticipated traditions every October is dressing up for Halloween, whether in group costumes with friends or a creative outfit by themselves. It is a time to showcase creativity and have fun by transforming into someone or something else for a night.
Some popular costumes include classic Halloween costumes, such as portraying a witch, vampire or monster, or taking something ordinary and adding scary features, like a zombie bride. Another popular theme is dressing up as an animal in a onesie. Many people also opt for creative DIY costumes that showcase their unique personalities and artistic talents. One other popular idea is dressing up as a favorite character from a book, movie or TV show. The costumes display each individual’s personality, since the many options make it easy to find something that appeals to everyone.
Many students choose to do a group costume with their friends, with all of them either being the same character or having costumes centered around a theme. Junior Camila Qaqundah is dressing up as a sailor this year. In her friend group, the girls dress up as sailors, and the guys dress up as captains.
“We were just kind of researching, and we looked on Pinterest, and we found cute outfits,” said Qaqundah. “I like that you can match with a group, but then you can wear different outfits and still match together.”
Freshman Audrey Johnston is also choosing to be a part of a group costume, dressing up as an alien with her group of friends.
“We picked our costume because we found it on Pinterest, and we thought the idea was cute,” said Johnston. “My favorite thing about dressing up is taking cute pictures with my friends. It is also just fun.”
Another idea is to do a solo costume, which can sometimes be simpler since no one is required to match and there is more creative freedom. Lara Hollblad-Fadiman, a junior, is dressing up by herself as a mouse.
“I just looked on Pinterest and saw some inspo, and I feel like dressing up as a mouse is really easy. Like, I just have to buy the ears and wear whatever I want,” said Hollblad-Fadiman. “[I love how] you can wear whatever you want [with] no judgment. You can be creative with it, and I just think it is a way to promote individuality. You can do group costumes, but you can also do a singular costume …”
Halloween is an excellent time for self-expression and creativity, letting people show off their imaginations through costumes. Whether dressing in a group or going solo, the holiday promotes connection and individuality. Students highlight how their costume choices bring them joy and foster community.
Halloween is a fun tradition where everyone can transform into their favorite characters, making it a night filled with creativity and enjoyment.
