Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent challenge faced by many individuals, including some members of the NDB community. October is dedicated to raising ADHD Awareness.
In 2004, the U.S. Senate designated October as ADHD Awareness Month, expanding it from a single-day observance to a month-long one. This period aims to educate communities about the topic and how individuals without the condition can offer support and assistance to those affected by it.
Having ADHD in school can often make learning and focusing more difficult, which is why it is important to ensure everyone is aware of how they can be mindful to those around them with ADHD.
“Just being aware that someone has any challenge, whether it’s ADHD or something else, and just knowing that and being compassionate about it … is a huge thing,” said Social Sciences Teacher Melanie Flint.
In the Bay Area, specifically, many mental health organizations hold ADHD-based discussions and create physical and online posters to spread information and awareness. Individuals also repost social media announcements or create announcements of their own in order to bring more attention to the month.
There are multiple resources here at NDB for anyone looking for support or for anyone wanting to become more educated on the topic, such as the counselors and psychology teachers.
Individuals with ADHD often perform better in an environment tailored to their learning needs, which can be difficult to obtain in a school setting. Measures such as listening to music or having accommodations such as receiving extra time to complete assignments can improve their learning experience.
